Hon. Winston Ieonard Spencer Churchill was unanimously passed by the Aldershot Town Council on 1st Nobember, '944. It was not possible, for a number of reaTons, for Mr. Churchill to make the journey to Aldershot to receive the Freedom and he ultimatelj con5ented to the Ceremony taking place in ILontlon. Alderchot is not an ancient tomn and has little cibic history behind it, hut for nearly one hundred >ears it has been the centre of the Rritish Arm). Your brilliant and adienturous career as astatesnian, soldicr, orator and author has earned you undying fame and ha5 also inade you the outstandins personality not only in the British Empire, but t h ro iiglioii t the m ho I e n o 1-1 d. F ? Your early military service was spent in this Borough, and therefore Aldershot has a peculiar interest in your after career. Your leadership has been an inspiration to all concerned, whether in the Fighting Services or on the Home Front, and your unwearying confidence has been an invariable tonic to those who, during times of crisis, might have lost faith in ultimate Victory. It is with this thought in mind that we hail you as our Leader and we invite you to accept from this military Borough the highcst honour M hich it is in our power to bestow. At a Meeting of the Borough Council held on 1st November, 1944, at 10 a.ni., the following Resolution was passed :- "FREEDOM OF THE BOROUGH That the Freedom of the Borough ot Aldershot be conferred on The Rt. Honourable WINSTON SPENCFR CHURCHILL, C.H., F.R.S., M.P., Prime Minister, First Lord of the Trcasurj, Minister of Defence, and Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, in appreciation of the unique and most distinguished ser\ ice rcndcred by him on behalfot the Nation in the prosecution of the War." COUNCIL The Mayor of Aldershot will then ask Mr. Churchill to accept the Casket containing the Illuminated Script conferring the Freedom of the Borough. Mr. Churchill, having accepted the Casket and Script will then make the customary Declaration and sign the Roll of Honorary Freemen. The Declaration is as follows:- _~~__ ~~~ ~~___ "I, Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill, do solemn) and sincerek declare that I will well and truly serve our Sovereign Lord GEORCE the Sixth, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and of the British Domin- ions beyond the Seas, King, Defender of the Faith, his heirs and successors, Kings and Queens of Great Britain, as a free and franchised man of the Borough of Aldershot. I will preserve the peace and tranquillity of the said Borough so far as in me lieth and if I know of any unlawful conventicles or assemblies against the State thereof I will forth- with disclose the same to the Mayor of the said Borough for the time being whom I will aid by my best counsel and advice and I will defend the customs and privileges of this Borough in every just and lawful cause."
